RPE stands for Rating of Perceived Exertion and is a simple way for someone to report how hard exercise feels. It usually uses a numbered scale where higher numbers mean greater effort, breathlessness, and fatigue. People use RPE to judge and control exercise intensity when heart-rate monitors or other devices are not available. It captures the personal, moment-by-moment sense of effort, combining signals from muscles, breathing, and the mind. RPE matters because it helps people train safely and effectively by matching effort to goals like endurance, strength, or recovery. It is useful across all ages and fitness levels, since perception of effort often aligns with physiological strain. Coaches and therapists rely on RPE to adjust workouts, prevent overtraining, and manage exertion in people with health conditions. Teaching someone to use RPE empowers them to self-regulate exercise without complex equipment.
