Accelerometer

An accelerometer is a tiny sensor that measures acceleration — how quickly something speeds up, slows down, or changes direction. It senses motion along one or more axes and reports that movement as numerical values, often in units of "g" (gravitational force). Most modern accelerometers in phones and wearables are MEMS devices that contain a small mass on springs; when the device moves the mass shifts and the sensor converts that motion into an electrical signal. Because they are small and low-power, accelerometers are embedded in many everyday devices like smartphones, fitness trackers, game controllers, and cars. They enable simple features such as turning a screen when you rotate a phone, counting steps, detecting drops, and registering shakes for input. In health and activity tracking, accelerometers help estimate movement patterns, intensity of exercise, and steps taken over time. They are also used for safety systems — for example, detecting abrupt deceleration in a crash or triggering fall alerts for older adults. While accelerometers are very useful, they have limits: they measure acceleration rather than exact position, so deriving speed or distance requires mathematical integration and can accumulate error. They can also be noisy and affected by vibration or orientation, so many applications fuse accelerometer data with other sensors like gyroscopes and GPS to get more accurate results. Understanding what an accelerometer does matters because it explains how devices know about movement and can offer helpful features, from fitness feedback to safer technology.
