Exercise Volume
Exercise volume is the total amount of work you do over a workout or a set period, like a week. It includes measures such as duration, distance, number of sets and repetitions, and total weight lifted. For example, a runner’s volume might be weekly miles, while a weightlifter’s volume is the total sets × reps × load across sessions. Volume largely determines how much stress you place on muscles, connective tissue, and the cardiovascular system, and it plays a big role in the kind of fitness you develop. Higher volume tends to build endurance and muscle size, whereas lower volume combined with higher intensity often targets strength and power. Increasing volume gradually is a reliable way to progress while minimizing injury risk, but doing too much without enough recovery can cause fatigue and overuse problems. Balancing volume with intensity and planned rest is key to reaching specific goals, whether that’s endurance, strength, or general health. Tracking volume helps you plan progression, recognize when to taper, and keep training sustainable over the long term.
