NHANES is a U.S. program that collects detailed information about the health and nutrition of people through interviews, physical exams, and laboratory tests. It is designed to represent the whole population, so its findings help describe how common health conditions and behaviors are across the country. Participants answer questions about diet, lifestyle, and medical history, and they also undergo measurements like blood pressure and blood tests. Because it combines questionnaire data with objective exam results, it gives a clearer picture than surveys that only ask people to self-report. Data are collected regularly and released to the public, allowing doctors, scientists, and policy makers to track trends over time. The program matters because it informs public health guidelines, identifies groups at higher risk, and helps set priorities for health programs. For example, it can show changes in obesity rates, nutrient intakes, or the prevalence of chronic diseases. Its large, representative sample makes its results useful for making national estimates and for studying how different factors relate to health. But it also has limits: it often collects data at one point in time for each person, so it can't always prove cause and effect. Still, NHANES is a powerful tool for spotting health problems early and guiding actions to improve population health.
